Ghoomar - Traditional Thali Restaurant
I woke up a few days craving some good food. I was bored out of my mind, sitting in front of my laptop, attending meetings and eating nothing but whatever was cooked for lunch that day. Now don’t get me wrong, I love my mom’s food. It is the perfect blend of nurtition and flavour. But, I wanted something different.
I had been to Ghoomar a couple years back with my mom (maybe 2022?) and back then I remember loving it. The memory hit me recently and I decided to go back there for a trip down memory lane.
The experience
I went there at around 12:15pm (reserved a table from zomato) and was roughly the first one there. Things were still being set up, but it did not lead to a disturbance in the ambiance. The place is quite beautiful with a lot of portraits of traditional rajasthani imagery and a person playing live music on a traditional instrument (i do not know what its called).
The people are polite and ready to explain what they are serving. The service is fast and you can ask for extras as many times as you want.
Seating could be improved. The place I sat was directly in front of the entrance and to the side of the staff doors so the traffic was quite high, sometimes distrupting the experience. I was a single person, so maybe that was a reason. I am pretty sure I could ask for better seating as the resturant was more or less empty but I did not and that is on me.
The food
My personal favorites were (in decreasing order)
- Paneer sabji
- Bhindi sabji
- Daal baati (not churma)
All the other dishes (as listed in the hero image) were not bad. In particular I loved the aam ras, but after such a heavy spread the curd-like flavour wasn’t really what I was looking for. I really wish there was something similar to a soda that I could have had which could have worked as a pallete-cleanser and digestive thing.
I did not like the Gatte ka sabji. It felt grainy in my mouth and I did not like what was inside the “pakoda” (im not sure what its called). It was spicy in a very raw spices manner which hit my throat. I also wasn’t a fan of the Churma but that only comes down to me not liking sweet things a lot. The Khichdi had a very weird texture and I did not have much of it. The Kaadi was a bit too sour for me, but mixed along with the pakoda it is a nice balance to have alongside the rice.
Nothing could beat the Roti + Paneer sabji combo and I couldn’t have enough of it.
Opinions
It costs 625 rupees for one standard thali and you can refil it as much as you can. If you have an appetite then it is the perfect place for you. Personally, I think this is a visit once in a few years kind of deal. I have had similar meals in authentic places in rajasthan, especially in Chokhi Dhani, Jaipur and the flavours there hit different.
Honestly, if you havent had Rajasthani Food ever, then this is probably a good starting and introduction point. But, if you are a frequent eater then this is nothing too special. Highly recommend to atleast try out once.
